Perfection of Body and Mind through Yoga Techniques

Yoga, as an ancient physical and mental discipline, is popular among celebrities and ordinary citizens all over the world. We have seen many celebrities such as Madonna, Hugh Jackman and Jane Fonda extolling the virtues of Yoga as a panacea for achieving well-toned bodies and tranquil minds. Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty has even released videos demonstrating Yoga techniques.

What is it about Yoga that attracts so many people? Is Yoga just a physical fitness regime? At yogamiracles.com, our goal is to introduce the basic concept of Yoga, and also provide in-depth information on how practicing Yoga is beneficial for both physical and mental health.

Let’s start with a basic introduction to Yoga, its principles and practice.

What is Yoga?

The roots of the word “Yoga” lies in the ancient Sanskrit term “Yuj” which means to join or bind. Patanjali, the author of the earliest known Yoga treatise “Yoga Sutra”, explains the ultimate goal of Yoga is self-realisation – that is the joining or merging of the individual with the universal consciousness. Patanjali describes this state as one where there is stillness of mind.

Yoga is more than a mere physical fitness regime. It combines physical and mental disciplinary practices to help the individual achieve a higher state of consciousness. Colon Cleansing Diet is more important to keep your bowls clean when you practice yoga exercises and meditation to develop a healthy vibration from within.

Various Stages of Yoga

Patanjali describes eight stages of Yoga. All the eight stages together constitute the yogic discipline.

The early stages of Yoga are:

  • Yama – This stage is about following principles such as non-violence and truth.
  • Niyama – The second stage recommends purity, contentment and austerity in daily life.
  • Asanas or Yogic Postures – This stage involves the practice of various yogic postures. Some examples of postures are Padmasana and Bhadrasana. Specific asanas are recommended for medical conditions such as spinal problems, arthritis etc. Practicing yogic postures or asanas can prevent as well as cure numerous disorders.
  • Pranayama or Breath Control – Some Yogic gurus recommend that asanas should first be mastered before trying out breath control exercises or Pranayama. Breath control exercises can help in controlling the mind and emotions.
The later stages concentrate on focussing the mind, meditation and finally achieving self-realisation.

Yoga tips for Diseases

Practicing Yoga can help in the treatment of many diseases. Let us take a look at some medical conditions which can be alleviated through yogic techniques.

  • Yoga for Anxiety and Depression – Regular breath control or Pranayama done in Padmasana or similar sitting posture can help in stabilising the mind and any emotional upheavals. Sudarshan Kriya is also effective in anxiety and depression, as found in a Harvard mental health study.
  • Yoga for Losing Weight or Obesity – Yogic exercises such as Surya Namaskar, Trikonasana and Mayurasana can help in reducing weight. Participating in yoga, combined with eating well will have a tremendous effect on your weight loss goals.
  • Yoga for Women – Yogic postures are extremely beneficial for medical conditions faced by women. Apart from Pranayama and Shavasana, women can also practice postures such as Sarvangasana which helps in hormonal balance.
All yogic practices, including Pranayama, should be done under the supervision of a trained yoga practitioner. There are some of the weight loss programs and surgeries such as bariatric surgery to help to chuck out of obese condition supported by a perfect dieting program.
