Connection Between Celebrities And Yoga

Celebrities often speak about their new found yoga interests on television or in the magazines. Celebrities and yoga match well and stars like to expand on their lifestyle and exercise routines. Here are some of their quotes about yoga:
Madonna
"Yoga is a metaphor for life. You have to take it really slowly. You can't rush. You can't skip to the next position. You find yourself in very humiliating situations, but you can't judge yourself. You just have to breathe, and let go. It is a workout for your mind, your body and your soul."
Ricky Martin
"I'm learning yoga. It's fascinating. Once again, it's all about getting to know your "self." Connecting your heart and your mind in order for you to not make compulsive or obsessive decisions in life. Simplicity is the medicine."

As Ricky Martin and Madonna are friends, she got Ricky interested in yoga in the first place and taught him a few basic lessons after which he started practising yoga himself every day.

"I started [yoga] about five years ago. I will say, definitely, it changed my life. It made me calmer. It puts you right in the place of witness - which is great."

The Reasons Why Celebrities Practise Yoga

Celebrities that do yoga have all mentioned a few reasons why they spend their time doing yoga exercises of which most reason are:
  • Relaxation. The stars lead busy lives and are under a lot of pressure as they always have to look their best. Yoga helps them to relax and look good at the same time.
  • Strengthening the body. As celebrities need to lose weight for certain film roles or have to shed excess weight after giving birth, yoga is a gentle but effective way to exercise.
  • Toning. The body burns fat and builds muscle with yoga.
  • Yoga has become a fashion statement. Most artists have at least once tried yoga and especially since Madonna started talking about her yoga exercises other stars have followed.
  • Yoga can be practised at home and in (members only) private gyms to ensure that celebrities can do yoga in private.

Popularizing Yoga

Stars like Madonna and actress Jennifer Aniston have contributed greatly when it comes to the popularization of yoga and yoga classes. Of course yoga is traditionally more than just a few exercises and yoga can be seen as a way of life, linked to meditation and a healthy diet.

Celebrities and yoga have been in the news more and more ever since Madonna started incorporating yoga poses in her shows on tour, and she speaks about yoga so much that it sometimes seems as if she is using her interest in yoga as a means to put a new spin on her image. Many celebrities that do yoga have never mentioned it in the press as they see it as something private, something they do for themselves.

Yoga has become more popular in the past ten years and magazines, centres and health shops featuring yoga products have seen their yoga-related income rise, thanks to many a celebrity.
